I remembered this movie better than it was, it has not aged very well.
Times are different, and you could really feel the chemistry (read romance) between Manny and Diego (Cristian, with a strong moral side). Which still would not be possible in a current family film without angering large swaths of closed minded population. Barring that, there was more attraction between them than most movies ever have.
It was possibly a decent family movie when it came out, but the early interactions between Manny (an Isaac type) and Sid (Dave type) screamed of a toxic relationship.
Actually, every character in this movie had red flags and toxic traits. Which is worrisome for a family movie.
I admit, I do not have the same love for this movie as people born in the late 80s or early 90s might have.
The squirrel (Syb) is still probably the best character in the movie and the whole series, but at the same time, I find it properly represents the problem with it. Playing on that one straight line of story.
On an interesting side, this movie is noted for having no female characters. Which does turn the love triangle in on the whole gay aspect of the characters. It is also a little of Three Men and a Baby.
I could do without seeing this movie again.
