It is not that it is a bad movie, actually it was a very good movie… when it came out. I find that time has taken away from my love of it.
The characters are fun and relatable, but probably more to me 20 years ago than the me who is now.
Does that mean that I am actually that far from my childhood? Possibly, but I think it relates more to how technology has come such a long way since this movie came out, technology shaping how we view the world.
In that way, this movie feels dated.
Woody and Buzz were already somewhat dated toys when the movie came out,and we are now almost 20 years later, and we can debate whether Woody should have been left pure in his box as his value has gone way down.
Maybe it is the innocence of that movie that I have long walked away from. My comfort movies are John Wick, Deadpool, and Jaws… Toys just does not scream to my personality.
I just do not feel it would scream to someone who is closer to the age of the boy in this movie. Nor do I think that attachment to his toys would be shared the same way by the youth of today. Which might also be the message of this movie.
The story itself is formulaic. There was nothing new in telling it then, and it has been much copied since.
The animation for the time was amazing (for American animation), and it would hold hope well against the animation today.
I do not believe this film could be remade. The time for this exact story has passed. It was good getting to see it again, and I can wait another 20 years, I think.
