I have been a fan of Keanu Reeves since, uh… a really long time. I saw him in Babes in Toyland (1986) without knowing who he was. Watched it because I had a childhood crush on Drew Barrymore. Yes, we are that old.
Keanu has never been an actor you love for his verbal acting. Most of his best roles have him with a limited speaking part.
He does speak a lot in the classic bisexual erotic Point Break, but I admit I did not pay attention. We will get to that when we get there. This movie is on the list.
John Wick is the perfect role for Keanu, and the character is wholly him, much like Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool. John Wick is the evolution of Johnny Mnemonic and Constantine.
So, enough with Keanu, onto Mr. Wick, the man who could solve his problem with a pencil. This movie is my reference to anyone who meets my cat, and my warning that if anything happens to her, you can refer to me as Mr. Wick.
The violence in this movie is excessive, but beyond the believable amounts of excessive, and it is done with such style that it eroticises it.
Much like Scream (1995), this movie inspired everything that happened after it. It altered the way violence could be stylised and opened the door for Deadpool to be what it was.
John Wick is porn.
This first movie was in something of a start zone. Some of the mobs were frustratingly hard, and some mobs were really cheating. Your arsenal is the starting gear, with a few upgrades along the way, but you are still doing a lot of it by hand.
John Wick must also be in the Blade universe, as it appears dancing will keep you safe from harm. It does help that everyone is firing some pretty single target hollow-point rounds that penetrate only as far as the body.
John Wick is everything I had always imagined The Punisher would be.
We love these movies, and they are on heavy rotation. Just the right amount of violence to deal with the stress of everyday life.
