Boys Don’t Cry 1999

1729th movie, 281st from the 1990s, 477th on Disney+

Part of the Pride collection.

This is my first ever viewing of this movie.

Watching Boys Don’t Cry for the first time. I am not impressed so far. The main character, for whatever reason is a predator, whether he acknowledges it or not. He wants what he wants, knowing full well that he is deceiving people. It is a complex deception, it is complex to even refer to it as a deception.

I am aware that this movie is dated, that when it came out we were in the infancy of GenX LGBT community, and that in big cities like Montreal we were still only at our 5th Pride.

This is a sensitive subject not only for others, but for myself as well. Perhaps it has not aged well. The world has changed in 25 years.

My comments do not reflect the real story, but the Hollywood glorification of it. I have never been a fan of how movies use sexuality to glorify rape. Either from the predatory actions of my main character or more aggressively so from the extreme actions of the antagonists.

All in all, it is just complicated.

The one bonus of this movie is that it still raises questions that need to be asked.
