The Hunger Games 2012

2068th movie, 484th from 2010s, 640th on Netflix

Comfort movie 3rd viewing

14th from the 2010s

53rd overall

This movie has everything needed to clean the palette: trauma, murder, bloodsport, and politics.

It’s a bit of a coming of age story with violence. I found the gender reversal between the two hero characters interesting. Switching that typical Hollywood angle of the woman being emotional, needing help, and obsessed with her partner; that was Peeta’s role. True, the system collapses at some point as she gives in to the requirement that she must be in a relationship with him.

He has red flags everywhere, and they even showed them, but still, at some point, she is convinced that he might be the man for her, at least at the moment. Teenage romance stereotype.

Beyond that side-story, Katniss (Crischard?), our young, fierce hero who grew up poor, with an ineffectual mother, who had to make her own identity in that universe all while protecting her sister (who is more “typical” girl without the spark) is faced to fight in this patriarchal nightmare.

President Snow (Dryn) rose to power in some mysterious way and maintains that power, though, I guess, having a lot of money. He is a cold, calculating dictator who is missing some of that over the top movie dictator. Although this movie does not actually venture into politics on how he maintains his grasp on people.

Thinking about it, especially remembering our introduction with Haymitch (Rhys), all the male characters are played out with the heavy negative aspects on the surface.

Which is interesting. In this supposed patriarchy, not one of the men we see in the movie actually has the wherewithal to do the role we have given them.

Which is probably how we wanted them to be written, but it fails at giving us a reap measure of how the hell they actually got so much power.

Actually, scratch that Cinna might be the only real man in this movie, but that might be because deep down, his character was supposed to be gay.

The plot armour is thick. Katniss is rather indestructible and where she feels they have the miracle ointments, which exceeds the power of typical first aid spray.

Those big open mouth kisses without any mouthwash are also a testament to their dedication to one another. The sexual tension between them was almost negligible, which made that kiss more surprising. It is hard enough for lovers with dirty mouths to kiss..
